The National University of Lesotho (NUL) has launched the Confucius Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (NULCI), an initiative designed to strengthen academic ties, boost agricultural innovation, and promote cultural exchange between Lesotho and China.
A Hub for Agriculture, Language, and Culture
NULCI, established with support from the Chinese International Education Foundation, will focus on training in agriculture, language, and cultural studies. Dr. Moeketsi Ntakatsane, the institute’s Director, called it a bridge connecting NUL with top Chinese universities. His counterpart, Co-Director Dr. Fanxing Meng from China, will help lead the program.
A First for Africa
This is the only Confucius Institute of its kind launched in Africa in 2024, joining a select group of just 11 worldwide. The project began in 2017, with approval from the NUL Council on December 19, 2024. The Confucius Institute insignia was formally granted on September 27, 2024, marking the official partnership.
Strengthening Agriculture and Education
NULCI aims to introduce modern farming techniques to Lesotho by leveraging China’s expertise. Farmers will learn new methods to improve food production, conserve water, and combat climate change. Chinese agricultural experts will visit Lesotho to share best practices.
The institute will also provide Chinese language courses for students, educators, and professionals at different levels. A planned computer lab will facilitate online learning and specialized Chinese language exams. NUL is set to offer a degree in Chinese Language and Culture, which could pave the way for more Basotho students to study in China.
Collaborations with Chinese Universities
NULCI will work closely with Jilin Agricultural University (JLAU) for agricultural training and Tonghua Normal University (THNU) for language and cultural programs. The initiative is expected to create job opportunities and enhance education in Lesotho.
Dr. Meng noted that beyond agriculture, the partnership is about bringing universities closer together and fostering long-term cooperation through education and culture.
