Kenya’s President, William Samoei Ruto, met with South Sudan’s Opposition Hold-Out Group and agreed to suspend the ongoing mediation process in Nairobi until March 2025. This decision, made at the request of the South Sudan government, aims to allow time for further consultations to determine the next steps in resolving the country’s political crisis.
For the past 11 months, Kenya has been facilitating the mediation efforts aimed at ending the political deadlock, which has contributed to a humanitarian crisis and security challenges in South Sudan. The mediation involves both the South Sudanese government and opposition factions seeking a long-term solution.
The Opposition Hold-Out Group delegation was led by General Pagan Amum and included General Paul Malong, General Stephen Buoy, General Mario Lada, Mr. Lual Dau, and Dr. Cirinho Hiteng.
