Kenya’s President William Ruto has reaffirmed the country’s strong ties with the United Nations, highlighting its contributions to peacekeeping missions worldwide and its distinction as the only Global South host of UN offices. Nairobi serves as the headquarters for both the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN-Habitat.
President Ruto held discussions with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed on the sidelines of the African Heads of State Energy Summit in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. The talks focused on security concerns in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with Mohammed seeking Kenya’s support in ensuring the safety of UN staff working with MONUSCO, the UN peacekeeping mission in the region.
Mohammed also reiterated the UN’s support for efforts by East African leaders to address the conflict in Eastern DRC, ahead of a regional meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
