Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged the G20 leaders to prioritize the reform of global governance institutions during the ongoing summit in Rio de Janeiro. In his address to the summit, Ramaphosa emphasized the urgent need for these institutions to adapt to the evolving global landscape and effectively address pressing challenges.
The South African president highlighted several critical issues that require immediate attention, including soaring global temperatures, rising inequality, and escalating geopolitical tensions in regions like Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan. He stressed the importance of robust multilateralism and a renewed commitment to the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
Ramaphosa called for the UN to play a central role in advancing peace, security, and human rights. He underscored the need to modernize the UN and make it more effective in addressing global challenges, such as the use of hunger as a weapon of war.
The South African leader also advocated for reforms in the global financial system, including increasing grants and concessional financing for developing economies. He urged the G20 to support the strengthening of the multilateral trading system and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Ramaphosa welcomed the call to unlock the potential of artificial intelligence and ensure its equitable benefits. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation to govern AI responsibly and promote a people-centered digital future.
As South Africa prepares to assume the G20 presidency in December, Ramaphosa reiterated the country’s commitment to strengthening and reforming the multilateral system. He pledged to work towards a future where no country or individual is left behind.
