Somalia, Sweden Strengthen Diplomatic Ties

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia and Sweden have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with a focus on security, political engagement, and diaspora affairs.

Ambassador Yonis Yassin Hasshi, Director of Europe and Americas at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met with Swedish Ambassador Joachim Waern on November 19th to discuss these issues.

During the meeting, Ambassador Hashi expressed gratitude for Sweden’s continued support and acknowledged Ambassador Waern’s contributions to advancing the relationship between the two countries.

With Somalia set to assume a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in January 2025, Ambassador Hashi reiterated the country’s commitment to prioritizing regional peace and security, particularly in the Horn of Africa.

Ambassador Waern commended the Federal Government of Somalia for its efforts in constitutional reforms and its progress in advancing the National Consultative Council (NCC) and the “one man, one vote” electoral initiative. He recognized these as significant milestones in Somalia’s democratic journey.

Regarding the recent elections in Somaliland, Ambassador Hashi expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the process and its outcome.
