Nelspruit, South Africa – The Lebombo border post between South Africa and Mozambique has been partially reopened, easing travel restrictions between the two countries.

The reopening, effective Friday at 3 PM, allows for the movement of people across the border. However, cargo processing will resume only after Mozambique officials are stationed at designated processing areas.

The partial reopening comes after a period of heightened tensions in Mozambique following disputed national elections. Violent protests erupted after the Frelimo party was declared the winner, leading to the closure of the major border crossing.

Dr. Michael Masiapato, Commissioner of South Africa’s Border Management Authority, confirmed the partial reopening, emphasizing the collaborative efforts between the two governments. “The high-level engagement was fruitful with the Government of Mozambique’s national leadership at the Lebombo port of entry engaging on workable solutions,” he said.

Masiapato added that discussions with trucking companies and traders are ongoing to ensure smooth operations and address any potential challenges.
