Tokyo, Japan – August 24, 2024 – Japan’s Foreign Minister, Yoko Kamikawa, hosted a working dinner with her Malawian counterpart, Nancy Tembo, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Minister Kamikawa highlighted the strong bilateral relationship between Japan and Malawi, emphasizing the significant contributions of Japanese volunteers to Malawi’s development and the shared values of the two countries. She also expressed Japan’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in promoting a free and open international order and ensuring human dignity, including women’s empowerment in peace and security.
Minister Tembo expressed gratitude for Japan’s assistance in various areas, including human resource development and infrastructure development. She also emphasized the importance of the rule of law, democracy, and women’s empowerment in strengthening the bilateral relationship.
Japan announced its decision to provide food assistance to Malawi through the World Food Programme (WFP) to address the country’s severe food insecurity. It also expressed its intention to continue supporting Malawi’s economic development through initiatives such as infrastructure improvement and human resource development.
Minister Tembo expressed her appreciation for Japan’s quality development cooperation and encouraged Japanese companies to expand their investments in Malawi. She also sought Japan’s support for human resource development in the mining sector.
The two ministers exchanged views on various regional and international issues, including the situations in Ukraine and East Asia, and agreed to continue working together on strengthening the United Nations, promoting nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and advancing women’s empowerment in peace and security.
