Japan, Somalia Vow to Strengthen Ties

Tokyo, Japan – August 24, 2024 – Japan’s Foreign Minister, Yoko Kamikawa, met with her Somali counterpart, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, to discuss bilateral relations and regional cooperation.

Minister Kamikawa expressed deep condolences to the victims and families affected by the recent terrorist attack in Mogadishu. She condemned terrorism in all its forms and emphasized Japan’s commitment to working closely with Somalia as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Minister Fiqi expressed gratitude for Japan’s ongoing support and expressed his desire to strengthen bilateral relations. He also highlighted Somalia’s expectations for cooperation with Japan in the Security Council.

Japan reiterated its commitment to supporting Somalia’s peace and economic development. Minister Kamikawa emphasized Japan’s willingness to cooperate with Somalia in these areas. Minister Fiqi expressed his appreciation for Japan’s long-standing friendship and expressed his expectations for continued support for peace and stability in Somalia and the Horn of Africa.

The two ministers agreed to further deepen Japan-Somalia relations ahead of the upcoming TICAD 9 conference.
