President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi has been awarded an honorary Doctorate in International Cooperation and Development by Joaquim Chissano University in Maputo, Mozambique. The ceremony took place on Thursday at the Joaquim International Conference Centre.

Chakwera praised the role of international cooperation in national development, stating that no country can succeed without external support. “Even the most developed nations need international assistance to thrive. Without it, they risk collapse,” he said.

The President highlighted the importance of Malawi’s relationship with Mozambique, stressing that the two countries benefit greatly from their shared border and mutual cooperation. He noted that recent global challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Cyclone Freddy, have demonstrated the need for nations to work together in the face of common problems.

Senior Professor Jose Magode, Vice Registrar of Joaquim Chissano University, explained that the award was given in recognition of Chakwera’s efforts to strengthen international ties. Magode noted that Chakwera’s visit to Mozambique in 2020 led to important agreements benefiting both countries.

Joaquim Chissano University, founded on February 5, 1986, grants honorary degrees to individuals who have made significant contributions to global development and community welfare.
