The Japanese Embassy in South Africa commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) with a reception on June 12th, 2024. The JSDF, established in 1954, safeguards Japan’s territory and plays a crucial role in regional stability. Beyond defense, the JSDF has participated in international peacekeeping missions since 1993, including deployments in Mozambique, South Sudan, and Djibouti. Notably, a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force ship will make its first-ever port call to Cape Town in July.

Ambassador USHIO Shigeru used the occasion to highlight Japan’s commitment to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). He also emphasized the strong ties between Japan and South Africa, spanning economic cooperation, resource development, infrastructure projects, and human resource initiatives. “The African people are irreplaceable friends of Japan,” the Ambassador declared.

The event wasn’t just about diplomacy. Japanese companies operating in South Africa showcased their latest innovations. Guests marveled at airbrushing techniques by Anest Iwata, a leading manufacturer. FUJIFILM, celebrating its 90th year, displayed cutting-edge medical technology alongside digital cameras and photo booths, allowing attendees to capture the night’s memories. NEC, a technology giant, presented their advanced communication and security solutions, including ground-breaking AI cybersecurity technology that detects and prevents cyberattacks in real-time. Rounding out the festivities, guests enjoyed delectable Japanese cuisine and beverages.
