New York, NY – May 25, 2024 – Professor Cephas Lumina, a renowned Zambian human rights lawyer, has secured a prestigious position on the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. The election, held on May 23rd at UN Headquarters, saw Lumina garnering 134 votes and earning a place among the nine new members chosen for a four-year term beginning in 2025.
Professor Lumina brings a wealth of experience to the Committee. A respected advocate of the High Court of Zambia and a Professor of international human rights law, he has long championed the cause of child welfare. During his tenure, Lumina has prioritized clear, actionable recommendations and a robust follow-up system to ensure their implementation. Additionally, he advocates for a coordinated approach among human rights bodies to streamline recommendations and maximize their effectiveness for governments and stakeholders.
This marks Professor Lumina’s second term on the Committee, having previously served from 2017 to 2021.
