Maseru, Lesotho – The Lesotho Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI) partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to launch E-service outlets in the capital city of Maseru on May 22nd, 2024. This initiative aims to improve access to government services for all Basotho citizens, especially those residing in remote areas.
Minister Nthati Moorosi emphasized the government’s commitment to digital inclusion. “We don’t want to leave anyone behind in this digital era,” she declared. The plan is to establish E-service centers in at least 40 schools and 10 post offices to ensure nationwide accessibility.
“Lesotho is aggressively pursuing digitalization,” Moorosi stated. She acknowledged challenges like infrastructure limitations and security concerns but highlighted efforts by MICSTI to map the transition from manual to digital processes across government ministries, aiming to reduce costs and streamline procedures.
Moorosi expressed gratitude for the successful partnership with UNDP, the Ministry of Trade, and other stakeholders.
Mr. Kanono Leronti Ramashamole, MICSTI’s Principal Secretary, echoed the importance of technology in daily life, promoting increased productivity and efficiency. He urged continued commitment to the digitalization journey.
Dr. Jacqueline Olweya, representing UNDP, highlighted the growing internet usage in Africa, albeit at a slower pace than other regions. She noted that Lesotho’s internet penetration has reached 47%, a positive trend. Olweya emphasized the significance of E-services in ensuring accessibility regardless of gender, location, or financial constraints. She commended MICSTI and the partners for their collaboration.
Mr. Ben Mosia, on behalf of E-service outlets, expressed appreciation to the government for entrusting them with this crucial role of delivering government services to the nation.
