The Electoral Commission (IEC) has assured citizens living abroad of a smooth voting process in the upcoming National and Provincial Elections 2024, addressing concerns and uncertainties about voting procedures outside the country.
Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo unveiled the voting process for citizens abroad, marking a significant milestone in the elections timetable. Overseas voting will commence on May 17, 2024, with nine countries casting ballots, followed by the remaining 102 countries on May 18, 2024.
Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria, Mamabolo highlighted London as a key voting station due to its high number of expected voters, totaling 24,194. The station will operate on both May 18 and 19, 2024.
Mamabolo disclosed that the international segment of the voters’ roll for out-of-country voters comprises 56,698 voters, with a total expected turnout of 76,580. This follows the approval of 20,886 VEC10 notifications from voters intending to vote outside the country due to temporary absence.
The IEC has ensured that all 111 foreign missions worldwide are equipped with necessary election materials, including ballot papers, voting booths, and envelopes, to facilitate voting.
Voting stations will be open from 07:00 am to 19:00 pm to accommodate the 76,580 voters exercising their right to vote in South Africa’s 2024 National Elections. The Electoral Commission will maintain extended hours on voting days abroad to assist voters with any inquiries.
