Kaduna, Nigeria – Wonderwoman Nigeria, a dynamic organization dedicated to empowering women and advocating for gender equality, has recently shared an exciting announcement. On July 15, 2023, they revealed a groundbreaking partnership with GIZ Nigeria & ECOWAS Country Office for their innovative “Plastics for Pads” project.

As part of this collaboration, Wonderwoman Nigeria has installed a larger-than-life plastics collector at the GIZ country office. The collector aims to facilitate the proper disposal of plastic bottles, containers, and cans. The revenue generated from recycling these plastics will be channeled towards equipping young girls in Kuje communities with reusable sanitary pads. Moreover, the initiative will also include essential body and sexual education sessions.

The pressing issue of period poverty in Nigeria is a significant concern, as many adolescent girls are compelled to drop out of school due to financial constraints faced by struggling parents. The inability to afford menstruation products hinders their mobility and participation in both academic and social activities. Additionally, the associated social stigma places them at risk, leading to increased anxiety.

The “Plastics for Pads” intervention addresses the urgent need for menstrual hygiene products. By enabling girls to stay in school during their periods, it not only enhances their educational opportunities but also reduces plastic waste, contributing to environmental sustainability. Moreover, the initiative plays a vital role in boosting the confidence and resilience of girls and young women, combating the stigma and social harassment surrounding menstruation. Furthermore, it promotes sexual and reproductive health while preserving the dignity of these young women.

GIZ Nigeria’s activities, mandated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the German Federal Foreign Office (AA), focus on various critical areas such as Economic Development and Employment, Security, Reconstruction and Peace, and Governance and Democracy.

The partnership with GIZ Nigeria & ECOWAS is especially significant as gender equality and women’s rights are central to their mission across all programs. Collaborating with a partner that recognizes the importance of Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHHM) in creating an inclusive and just economy is a milestone for Wonderwoman Nigeria.

The opening ceremony of this transformative alliance was graced by eminent dignitaries, including the Deputy Country Director, Portfolio Manager, PR and Communications Advisor, Development Advisor, and Gender Focal Point.

Looking ahead, Wonderwoman Nigeria and GIZ CO Nigeria & ECOWAS are committed to enhancing access to menstrual hygiene information, aligning with important Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including gender equality (SDG 5), poverty eradication (SDG 1), good health and well-being (SDG 3), quality education (SDG 4), and clean water and sanitation (SDG 6).

With this remarkable partnership, Wonderwoman Nigeria expands its footprint, paving the way for greater impact on the lives of young women and the environment. The Plastics for Pads project is a beacon of hope, bringing positive change to communities and empowering girls to unlock their full potential.
