On July 18, 2023, Dr. Chola Milambo, Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, assumed the role of chairperson in a significant virtual meeting. The meeting featured a briefing by Honorable Dmytro Kuleba, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, who addressed members of the African Group.
During the briefing, Minister Kuleba underscored the importance of reinvigorating the close relationships that African countries share with Ukraine. He emphasized that fostering such relationships and partnerships can play a pivotal role in addressing global challenges and finding effective solutions.
Within the framework of the United Nations Charter, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister stressed the significance of upholding principles like territorial integrity, a key aspect in promoting stability and international cooperation.
Additionally, Minister Kuleba divulged Ukraine’s preparations for hosting the upcoming Global Peace Summit, and he expressed a strong desire for active participation from numerous African states. While advocating for peace as a fundamental goal, he emphasized the importance of ensuring a just and lasting peace for all parties involved.
In response, Dr. Milambo reassured Honorable Kuleba of the African Group’s commitment to finding peaceful resolutions to the crisis in Ukraine. The group’s aim is to pave the way for the resumption of developmental agendas, allowing both nations to progress and flourish.
The purpose of this important briefing was to discuss recent visits to Ukraine and Russia by African Heads of State and Government, forming part of the broader African Peace Initiative.
