As the world commemorates Nelson Mandela Day, President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged individuals to actively promote peace. Declared as Nelson Mandela International Day by the United Nations in 2009, this annual observance encourages people to dedicate at least 67 minutes to making a positive impact in someone’s life.

The 67 minutes symbolize the years Nelson Mandela dedicated to fighting for justice, equality, and human rights. President Ramaphosa emphasized that Mandela’s ideals of peace, ending conflicts, and fostering international fellowship remain relevant today, particularly as many parts of the world are still plagued by strife.

Highlighting South Africa’s role in promoting global peace, Ramaphosa noted that the country draws on Mandela’s legacy to support societies in conflict. South Africa’s experience in negotiating an end to apartheid and establishing a multiparty democracy makes it a sought-after partner for parties seeking to resolve conflicts.

On December 5, 2023, the world will mark the tenth anniversary of Mandela’s passing, reflecting on his enduring legacy and the continued pursuit of peace.
