In celebration of World Bicycle Day, observed annually on June 3, the global community is highlighting the numerous benefits of cycling as a simple, affordable, clean, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. This sustainable means of travel not only contributes to cleaner air and reduced congestion but also plays a crucial role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting economic growth, reducing inequalities, and combatting climate change.

Regular physical activity, such as cycling, has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a key factor in maintaining good health across all age groups. The advantages of physical activity outweigh the potential risks, and even small amounts of exercise can lead to significant health benefits. By incorporating moderate-intensity activities like walking or cycling into daily routines, individuals can easily meet the recommended activity levels.

Moreover, the WHO emphasizes the importance of safe infrastructure for walking and cycling in achieving greater health equity. Particularly for marginalized urban populations who cannot afford private vehicles, walking and cycling provide a viable means of transportation while reducing the risk of various diseases, including heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, and premature death. Thus, investing in improved active transport not only promotes health but also ensures equitable access to transportation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted cities worldwide to reconsider their transportation systems, giving rise to a renewed focus on the benefits of cycling. As cities aim to decouple population growth from increased emissions, improve air quality, and enhance road safety, meeting the needs of pedestrians and cyclists has become a critical part of the solution.

Recognizing the significance of the bicycle as a sustainable tool for transportation, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on March 15, 2022, emphasizing the integration of cycling into public transportation systems for sustainable development. The resolution underscores the bicycle’s positive impact on climate change, sustainable consumption and production, and the promotion of environmental stewardship and health.

The declaration of World Bicycle Day on June 3 stems from an appreciation of the bicycle’s longevity, versatility, and positive attributes as a reliable and environmentally friendly means of transport. The General Assembly urges stakeholders to utilize the bicycle as a catalyst for sustainable development, with a focus on strengthening education, promoting health and disease prevention, fostering tolerance, understanding, and respect, and facilitating social inclusion and a culture of peace.

To encourage the adoption of cycling as a societal norm, the Assembly welcomes initiatives to organize bicycle rides at national and local levels. These rides not only contribute to physical and mental well-being but also play a vital role in cultivating a cycling culture within communities. The WHO Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018–2030 emphasizes the multiple health, social, and economic benefits associated with physical activity and underscores the contribution of policies that promote activities such as walking, cycling, sports, and active recreation to achieving the SDGs.

In the fight against climate change, each individual can make a difference. By choosing alternative modes of transportation like walking or cycling instead of relying on vehicles that burn fossil fuels, greenhouse gas emissions can be significantly reduced. Additionally, embracing cycling as a regular activity can improve personal health and fitness.

As the world grapples with the climate crisis, it is imperative to take action. From reevaluating our travel choices to adopting more sustainable consumption patterns, every effort counts. World Bicycle Day serves as a reminder of the bicycle’s role in fostering sustainable transportation, promoting health, and addressing the pressing challenges of our time.
