Berlin, May 26 – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his intention to have a renewed discussion on the situation in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin over a phone call “in due course.” In an interview with the Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper, released on Friday, the German leader acknowledged that it has been quite a long time since their last telephone conversation. However, Scholz affirmed, “I plan to talk to Putin again in due course.”
Regarding inquiries about the potential change of power in Russia, the German chancellor dismissed such speculative questions, stating, “I don’t give a dime for such speculative questions. Ultimately, authorities in Moscow and Kiev will have to [strike] an agreement.”
The previous telephone conversation between Putin and Scholz took place on December 2. Lasting approximately an hour, the discussion revolved around the conflict in Ukraine and its ramifications. During the call, the Russian president urged Berlin “to reconsider its position in the context of the developments in Ukraine.” It’s worth noting that the conversation was initiated by Germany. Prior to that, the two leaders had a telephone call on September 13, 2022.
