Maseru, Lesotho – The annual political dialogue between the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho and the Delegation of the European Union took place this year, marking a significant milestone in their partnership. The dialogue served as a platform for fruitful discussions and witnessed the signing of three financing agreements and two implementation agreements, reinforcing cooperation and support between the two entities.
The three financing agreements signed during the event encompassed various areas of development:
- Renewable Lesotho (EUR 15 million): This financing agreement aims to ensure energy security in Lesotho, improve access to reliable and affordable clean energy, and promote green growth within the country.
- Equitable Lesotho (EUR 8 million): The financing agreement under Equitable Lesotho seeks to reduce multidimensional poverty dimensions among the most vulnerable populations in Lesotho, prioritizing efforts to uplift their living conditions.
- Cooperation Facility and Support Measures (EUR 6 million): This financing agreement aims to strengthen civil society in Lesotho and establish a cooperation facility to support the implementation of the Multi-annual Indicative Programme 2021-2027 and the Team Europe Initiative, fostering sustainable development in various sectors.
The implementation agreements signed were equally significant:
- The German Cooperation Agency (GIZ) agreement: This agreement operationalizes the Renewable Lesotho component by providing technical assistance to the public and private energy sectors. The German Cooperation Agency will play a vital role in facilitating the effective execution of renewable energy projects in Lesotho.
- The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) agreement: This agreement operationalizes the Equitable Lesotho component, with a focus on providing support to social protection initiatives. UNICEF will contribute its expertise and resources to ensure the implementation of programs that benefit the most vulnerable segments of the population.

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Hon. Lejone Mpotjona, and the European Union Head of Delegation, H.E. Ms. Paola Amadei, jointly presided over the official opening of the political dialogue. Their presence emphasized the mutual commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in areas crucial to Lesotho’s development.
The signing of the financing and implementation agreements signifies the shared dedication to address critical developmental challenges and foster sustainable growth in Lesotho.
