The U.S. Mission in Nigeria, in partnership with the International Institute for Creative Development and Transcorp Hilton Abuja, screened “Sustained Outrage,” a documentary by Gabriela Cavanagh that highlights the importance of a free press in holding those in power accountable and standing up for the rights of the people. The screening was part of this week’s American Film Showcase, which aims to promote American culture and values through film.

After the screening, Embassy Press Attaché Robert Gabor led an engaging conversation with the audience, discussing the role of the media, the importance of investigative reporting, and the power of both citizens and the media to ensure government transparency and accountability.

As Walter Cronkite once said, “Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy, it is democracy.” The U.S. Mission in Nigeria believes in the vital importance of a free press in promoting democracy and protecting the rights of citizens. Through events like the American Film Showcase, the mission hopes to promote the values of a free and independent media and inspire discussion and action towards ensuring press freedom around the world.
