Six officials at South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs have been dismissed with immediate effect following findings of fraud and corruption, as the department continues to root out internal misconduct.
An additional six staff members received final written warnings. These disciplinary actions raise the tally of dismissals to 33 since July 2024, forming part of a broader anti-corruption campaign sweeping through the department.
Eight officials have already been convicted and handed prison sentences ranging from four to 18 years, while criminal cases are underway against 19 others.
The dismissals come in the wake of the newly established Border Management and Immigration Anti-Corruption Forum, which has enhanced cooperation between Home Affairs, the Border Management Authority (BMA), the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber said the department is moving decisively to purge corrupt elements. He warned that delays in addressing misconduct would not be tolerated and that the campaign will continue until all implicated officials are removed.
“We are seeing real momentum in cleaning up Home Affairs,” Schreiber said. “Those who are still engaged in corruption should know—we’re coming for you.”
