Ghana and Bulgaria are taking steps to deepen their diplomatic and economic ties with new opportunities in education and labour mobility on the horizon.
This development followed a courtesy visit by the Honorary Consul of Bulgaria to Ghana, H.E. Nicolaas C.M. Van Staalduinen, to Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra on April 3, 2025.
During their discussions, the two sides explored a range of initiatives, including pathways for Ghanaian youth to study in Bulgarian universities, the operationalization of the Apostille Convention to ease document authentication between the countries, and Ghana’s ratification of the Vienna Convention on Road and Traffic (1968) to open up job prospects for Ghanaian truck drivers in Bulgaria.
Welcoming the proposals, Hon. Ablakwa described the potential for legal labour migration, particularly for truck drivers, as a boost to Ghana’s broader strategy to create jobs through labour export. He noted that such arrangements could help lower domestic unemployment rates while providing Ghanaians with access to meaningful work abroad.
He also pointed to the educational exchange prospects as a lifeline for many Ghanaian students who struggle to secure local university placements, suggesting the Bulgarian options could expand access to higher education and equip young people with skills to thrive.
