The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina, is on a working visit to Lesotho from March 23 to 25, 2025. On March 24, he met with King Letsie III at the Royal Palace in Matsieng and later held discussions with Prime Minister Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane.
Dr. Adesina, who is serving his second term as the bank’s president, has overseen significant milestones, including a historic capital increase from $93 billion to $208 billion in 2019. Under his leadership, the AfDB has launched initiatives aimed at accelerating Africa’s economic growth and development.

Lesotho has benefited from several AfDB-funded projects designed to improve infrastructure, economic opportunities, and water access. These include the Climate Change Adaptation for Sustainable Rural Water Supply, which enhances water availability in rural areas, and the Lesotho Lowlands Water Development & Sanitation Project, which strengthens water supply and sanitation in Botha-Bothe Zone I. Another key initiative, the Value Chain Strengthening for Sustainable Growth project, focuses on job creation and economic opportunities for youth and women in agriculture, agro-industry, and tourism.
