In an exclusive interview with the Africa Daily Post, Prof. Obeka reflects on his leadership journey at Wesley University Ondo.
Interviewer: Prof. Obeka, leadership is often about vision and execution. What was your vision when you assumed office as the Vice-Chancellor of Wesley University Ondo in January 2021?
Prof. Obeka: My vision was to elevate Wesley University Ondo to a globally recognized institution that balances academic excellence, research innovation, and community impact. I aimed to expand academic offerings, enhance infrastructure, improve staff and student welfare, and build partnerships with global institutions. Education today must be dynamic, and I wanted Wesley University to be at the forefront of tertiary education in Nigeria.
Interviewer: Your academic journey has been distinguished. How did your background prepare you for this leadership role?
Prof. Obeka: My academic career spans several years of teaching, research, and administrative leadership. I began as a Research Assistant at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and later became an Assistant Lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where I eventually rose to the rank of Professor. I have held multiple leadership roles, including Head of the Geographical & Environmental Education Program, Deputy Dean, and Journal Editor/Chairman of the International Conference at A.B.U. Zaria and member, Quality Assurance Control of the University. Additionally, serving a first tenure as the Connexional Secretary for Evangelism and Discipleship in the Methodist Church Nigeria provided me with strategic management and leadership experience. These roles enhanced my ability to lead complex institutions and implement meaningful changes as Vice-Chancellor of Wesley University, Ondo.

Prof. Obeka: We have achieved significant growth across various sectors:

Prof. Obeka: It is a demonstration of our collective efforts. Leadership is not a solo journey, it requires the commitment of the entire university community—staff, students, and stakeholders. The recognition motivates us to continue striving for excellence, reinforcing our mission to be a leading academic institution. I am grateful to God for the opportunity to serve and to everyone who has contributed to the university’s progress.
