Zambia is setting its sights on becoming a major player in the global beef market, with the government aiming to turn the livestock sector into a key economic driver.
In a recent update, President Hakainde Hichilema spoke about Zambia’s progress towards becoming a net beef exporter during a Presidential Stocktake with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. He highlighted the potential of the livestock industry to diversify the country’s economy, reducing reliance on mineral resources.
Five Animal Disease Free Compartments (ADFCs) have already been established in Chikankata, Chipata, Chisamba, Mumbwa, and Namwala, with more to follow. The government has set a target of US$1 billion in beef exports annually as part of its plan to capitalize on this opportunity.
