The 75th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) featured the work of Phillip Leteka, a lecturer in the Drama and Theatre Unit at the National University of Lesotho. Leteka was the cinematographer for Ancestral Visions of the Future, a film written and directed by Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese, which premiered on February 20 at the festival.
Mosese’s film explores themes of dislocation, belonging, and memory. Blending fragmented narratives with mythical imagery, Ancestral Visions of the Future follows characters such as the Puppeteer, who cultivates herbs believed to extend life, and the Market Seller, a mother preserving the language of dreams in a city that has lost touch with its past. The film also reflects on Mosese’s childhood experiences, touching on loss and exile.

Leteka’s cinematography has earned critical praise, with Variety critic Guy Lodge calling the film “a visual masterpiece that seamlessly blends the ethereal with the tangible, capturing the essence of dislocation and belonging.”
The National University of Lesotho commended Leteka’s work, recognizing his creative excellence and the inspiration he provides to students and fellow artists.
