The Malawi government has been praised for its support of Mozambican asylum seekers in Nsanje District. Luisa Celma Meque, President of the Institute of Disaster Management Affairs (INGA) in Mozambique, visited Nyamithuthu Camp on Friday and commended the assistance provided to the refugees.
Meque noted that the help offered by Malawi is a testament to the strong relationship between the two countries. “The support that the Malawi Government renders to the asylum seekers is a true testimony of the good bilateral relationship between the two countries,” she said, expressing gratitude for the food and shelter provided to those seeking refuge.

The Mozambican government is also aware of the difficulties faced by those at the camp. Meque confirmed that aid, including rice, flour, blankets, and salt, had been sent to the refugees. She reassured the asylum seekers that the security situation in Zambezia Province had been improved, allowing for safe returns. “The Mozambican Government will arrange transportation to repatriate all its citizens,” Meque stated, urging refugees to register with the authorities. She also mentioned that those returning would receive a start-up package.
Mozambican High Commissioner to Malawi, Alexandre Herculano Manjate, assured the asylum seekers that efforts are being made to repatriate those who fled political violence in Mozambique.
However, life at the camp remains difficult for many, as Isabella Bernardo Vinte, an asylum seeker, pointed out the ongoing issue of water shortages and called for more support.
Retired General Ignacio Maulana, Commissioner for Refugees in the Department for Refugees, reported that 7,456 asylum seekers from Mozambique have been registered in Malawi.
