CAIRO, Jan 31 – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has extended congratulations to Syria’s newly appointed leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, following his rise to power on Wednesday. In a statement released Friday, Sisi wished Sharaa success in leading Syria and addressing the aspirations of its people.
Sharaa, a former Islamist militant linked to al Qaeda, took control after spearheading a rebel offensive that ousted longtime President Bashar al-Assad last year. Since assuming power, he has sought backing from both Arab and Western governments to consolidate his leadership.
Egypt, a key regional power and close ally of the United States, has maintained a firm stance against Islamist movements under Sisi’s leadership. The development in Syria presents a significant shift in the region’s political landscape, as Sharaa’s rule faces scrutiny from international players.
