The Last Ranger, a South African film directed by Cindy Lee, has been nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards, set to take place in March 2025. The film, inspired by true events in the Eastern Cape, portrays the story of Thandi, a rhino that survived a poaching attack, and the determined woman who fought to protect endangered species at the Kariega Game Reserve.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed pride and optimism about the nomination, acknowledging the film’s success in bringing South African cinema to the global stage. “We received the news with great pride and anticipation for the upcoming Oscar ceremony,” McKenzie said.
The Last Ranger has already won accolades, including Best Short Narrative at the 2024 Pan African Film Festival. Featuring strong performances by Avumile Qongqo, Liyabona Mroqoza, and Makhaola Ndebele, the film celebrates both wildlife conservation and the dedication of those working to protect it.
