MORONI, Jan 24 – Comoros President Azali Assoumani has publicly stated that he intends to pass on power to his son, Nour El Fath, when his presidential term ends in 2029. This announcement confirms allegations from critics who have long accused Assoumani of grooming his son for leadership.
Assoumani, who was re-elected in 2024 amid claims of voter fraud, appointed El Fath to oversee government affairs and granted him broad powers over the cabinet.
Speaking to supporters on Moheli Island, Assoumani said, “I will place my son to replace me as head of the state and the party.”
El Fath has previously denied any plans for a dynastic succession, insisting that Comoros is not a monarchy. He did not immediately comment on his father’s latest remarks.
Opposition groups quickly condemned the president’s statement, with Abdallah Mohamed Daoudou, a spokesperson for the opposition, asserting that it was a confirmation of what had been suspected all along.
