New York, January 20, 2025 – Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, addressed the United Nations Security Council during its 9841st meeting, focusing on the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Somalia’s continued support for the Palestinian cause.

Speaking at the session convened by Algeria, Fiqi highlighted the dire conditions facing Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, and acknowledged the detailed briefing by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the crisis.

Fiqi welcomed a recent ceasefire agreement brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, describing it as a positive step toward peace but stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict. He called for an end to the Israeli occupation and the blockade on Gaza, describing them as key obstacles to lasting stability.

He also underscored the urgent need for reconstruction efforts in Gaza, advocating for investments that prioritize economic development and the well-being of local communities. Somalia pledged its support for initiatives aimed at creating a stable and just future for Palestinians.

The minister reaffirmed Somalia’s backing for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and urged the international community to ensure its operations continue without interference. He warned against unilateral actions that could worsen the crisis.
