Key stakeholders in Ondo State convened on December 18, 2024, at the Ministry of Women Affairs Hall, Igbatoro, to address the escalating impacts of climate change. The forum, part of the “Empowering Youth Civil Society to Build Stronger Communities” project, focused on mobilizing local communities for climate action. The initiative, supported by the German Embassy in Abuja and driven by the Nigeria Youth SDGs Network, aims to empower grassroots efforts and foster collaboration.
Organized by local groups, including The Green Institute, Aquaworld CDI, Kids & Teens Resource Centre, YALI Network Ondo Hub, the Handicapped Education Foundation (HANDEF), and Rolan Foundation, the event introduced the draft Local Adaptation Plan of Action (LAPA), a strategic framework for mitigating climate risks and supporting sustainable livelihoods across the state.

Emmanuel Adamolekun of Kids & Teens Resource Centre delivered the opening remarks, followed by contributions from government representatives. Foluke Arijeniwa of The Green Institute provided an overview of the project, which has evolved through capacity-building workshops, training sessions, and community dialogues. She noted the effects of climate change on livelihoods in Ondo State, particularly among women, youth, and marginalized groups.
The forum emphasized inclusivity, allowing marginalized groups to contribute to the LAPA draft. Women highlighted their role in agriculture while addressing issues like erratic rainfall. Youth participants called for technology-driven approaches, including renewable energy and waste management, while advocating for capacity-building programs. Representatives of people with disabilities urged for inclusive disaster preparedness plans and accessible infrastructure.
During a breakout session led by Olasunkanmi Olagboye of Aquaworld, participants identified climate challenges and proposed solutions. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, Mrs. Victoria Abitoye, represented by Dele Akintan, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to climate resilience. She outlined initiatives such as solar-powered irrigation and improved water resource management.

Dr. Joseph Adeyekun of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry stressed the importance of public awareness and sustainable practices like tree planting to combat deforestation. The draft LAPA, incorporating the input of all stakeholders, is set to be presented to the state executive council and other relevant authorities for further consideration.
