ABUJA – The Nigerian government has received $52.88 million in assets recovered from the United States and linked to former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke.
Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi announced the development on Friday at a formal signing ceremony in Abuja between Nigeria and the United States.
Fagbemi said $50 million of the recovered funds will be deployed through the World Bank for a rural electrification project, while the remaining $2 million will be used by the International Institute of Justice to strengthen the justice system and counter corruption.
He described the asset recovery as a milestone in Nigeria’s collaboration with the United States to combat corruption and promote the rule of law, adding that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address corruption.
United States Ambassador to Nigeria Richard Mills called for proper monitoring of the funds to ensure they benefit Nigerians.
