YAOUNDE, Jan 4 – At least five Cameroonian soldiers were killed and several others wounded on Friday in a cross-border attack by gunmen from Nigeria in the village of Bakinjaw, near the southwestern border, local officials said.
Aka Martin Tyoga, a member of parliament for Akwaya district, said the attackers, identified as armed Fulani herdsmen, crossed from Nigeria’s Taraba state and targeted a military post. He said the attack was in retaliation for the killing of several herdsmen by Cameroonian soldiers the previous day.
Agwa Linus, the traditional ruler of Bakinjaw, confirmed that the attackers burned down his home during the raid. “This is not the first time they are attacking – it’s very unfortunate,” he said.
