At least 71 people have been killed in a road accident in Ethiopia’s Sidama region, when a truck filled with passengers plunged into a river. The crash occurred on Sunday in the Bona district, according to Wosenyeleh Simion, a spokesperson for the Sidama regional government.
The truck, which missed a bridge and fell into the river, was reportedly overloaded, a factor believed to have contributed to the deadly crash. The victims included 68 men and three women, with five others critically injured and being treated at Bona General Hospital.
The passengers were returning from a wedding, and some families lost multiple members in the tragedy. Initial reports had placed the death toll at 60, but the number was later revised to 71. Traffic police indicated that the road, which features many sharp bends, may have also played a role in the accident.
