Nairobi, Kenya – Kenyan President William Ruto has pledged to strengthen the country’s relationship with Ghana, expanding cooperation into sectors like trade, agriculture, mining, tourism, and oil and gas. Speaking after meeting with Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, on December 29, Ruto highlighted the importance of deepening ties to foster shared prosperity between the two nations.

Ruto’s commitment comes as the leaders discussed the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to enhance intra-African trade. Mahama expressed his support for the regional integration efforts, particularly focusing on how it can stimulate economic growth and improve opportunities for African nations.

“We will enhance relations with Ghana by broadening opportunities in various sectors, including trade and investment,” President Ruto said. “This will open new prospects for both our peoples and contribute to shared prosperity.”

The two leaders also talked about regional security and the benefits of working together to promote economic growth across the continent. Mahama, a former Chair of the African Union’s high-level committee on trade, emphasized the importance of expanding trade between Kenya and Ghana within the AfCFTA framework.

Additionally, Mahama extended an invitation to President Ruto for his inauguration on January 7, 2025, in Accra, which Ruto accepted. The meeting also saw Ruto thanking Mahama for his support of Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission chairmanship.

Kenya will enhance her relations with Ghana to include more sectors in trade and investment, agriculture, mining, tourism, oil and gas.

This will broaden opportunities for the people of the two countries and ensure our shared prosperity.
