Victoria Island, Nigeria – Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced plans to fully utilize the state’s waterways to drive economic growth and expand its tourism and transportation sectors. Speaking at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta on Victoria Island, the governor said the event symbolizes a commitment to transforming the state’s water resources into an economic asset.
“One-third of Lagos is surrounded by water,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “We must leverage this resource not only for transportation but also to build a thriving tourism ecosystem.”

Themed “Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,” the regatta brought together participants from the state’s five divisions. It featured a display of boats and other water infrastructure, highlighting Lagos’ maritime heritage. Sanwo-Olu, who opened the event, joined members of his executive council on a boat ride, emphasizing the waterways’ potential for relaxation and entertainment.
The Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the regatta as a platform to promote local businesses and attract tourism. “This event demonstrates the vibrant cultural heritage tied to our waterways and fosters economic growth by creating opportunities for businesses,” she said.

Benson-Awoyinka added that the event showcased parades, dance performances, and visual displays aimed at celebrating community traditions and sustainable practices.

The governor also expressed enthusiasm for the regatta’s role in kickstarting festive activities for the season, calling it a milestone in the state’s tourism development efforts.
