Abuja, Nigeria – The Spanish Embassy in Abuja hosted a captivating end-of-year concert, Vis a Vis – El Retorno, at the National University Commission (NUC) conference hall on December 6, 2024. The event showcased an exciting fusion of music, dance, and cultural exchange, with performances by Ara, the Queen of Drums, La Chocolata, Ruth Mahogany, and the ARB Music Band.
Ara, a trailblazing female talking drummer, opened the evening with a dynamic performance that seamlessly blended traditional Yoruba rhythms with modern beats. Known for redefining the music world with her unique sound, Ara’s mastery of the talking drum captivated the audience and brought a touch of cultural heritage to the global stage.
Ruth Mahogany, a poet, musician, and creative director, followed with a powerful performance that resonated deeply with the crowd. Known for her ability to weave profound poetry into her music, Mahogany’s art stems from her philosophical musings and her commitment to conscious creation. Her performance was a testament to her versatility as a music producer and composer, and her passion for blending diverse genres and societal topics into her art.
The ARB Music Band, a 21st-century urban African band, brought energy and elegance to the stage, delighting the audience with their innovative sound and infectious rhythms. Their performance further amplified the event’s celebration of modern African music.
La Chocolata, a multifaceted artist and dancer, also delivered a memorable performance, showcasing his unique style that merges music, dance, and theater. His joyful and intimate approach to performance was beautifully complemented by a special duo with Ara, creating a magical moment that left the audience in awe.

Eva Barta Martin, the Cultural Attaché at the Spanish Embassy in Abuja, expressed her gratitude to all guests for their participation and support for cultural growth between Spain and Africa. She also commended the artists for their exceptional performances, which reflected the strong cultural ties between the two regions.
Dr. Akintoye Johnson, Director of AJJ Investments, also shared his appreciation for the event, noting the successful fusion of Spanish and Nigerian music. “This initiative is brilliant, and I thoroughly enjoyed the music, especially the blend of our cultures.
