Accra, Ghana – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has sent 120 observers to Ghana to oversee the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, 2024. The delegation arrived in Accra on December 5 as part of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (ECOWAS-EOM).
Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, authorized the deployment, which includes 21 long-term observers and 120 short-term observers. They will monitor the electoral process across Ghana’s 16 regions and 216 districts.
The observers include representatives from the ECOWAS Parliament, Community Court of Justice, member states’ Ministries of Foreign Affairs, the ECOWAS Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC), and election experts from the region.
ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana, Ambassador Mohammed Lawan Gana, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to democratic governance during a welcoming ceremony. He said the elections are crucial for Ghana’s democratic standing and regional stability.
ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, stated the mission is guided by the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance of 2001, which mandates pre-electoral missions and election monitoring.
Head of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission, H.E. Mohammed Namadi Sambo, a former Vice President of Nigeria, urged observers to ensure that the elections are transparent, free, fair, and peaceful.
