The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) has ordered Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet provider, to cease operations in the country, citing a lack of proper licensing. The cease-and-desist order, issued on November 26, requires Starlink to immediately halt all activities in Namibia.
CRAN stated that its investigation confirmed Starlink was operating without a telecommunications service license, which is mandatory under Namibian law. While Starlink has submitted an application for the license, the regulator noted that the review process is ongoing and no authorization has been granted.
The regulator has also warned consumers not to purchase or use Starlink equipment or services, deeming them illegal in the absence of licensing. CRAN reported confiscating unauthorized Starlink terminals from users and has opened criminal cases with the Namibian Police.
SpaceX has not responded to inquiries regarding the cease-and-desist order.
