Pretoria, South Africa – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have petitioned South Africa’s Constitutional Court to revive impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa in connection with the “Farmgate” scandal.
The case revolves around allegations that millions of dollars were stolen from Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm, with the money reportedly hidden in furniture. A former intelligence official disclosed the theft to police.
An independent panel previously found evidence suggesting Ramaphosa may have committed misconduct. However, in late 2022, lawmakers from the African National Congress (ANC), which held a parliamentary majority at the time, rejected the panel’s findings and blocked the establishment of an impeachment committee.
The EFF contends that the National Assembly acted unlawfully by failing to hold the president accountable. Ramaphosa and the ANC have argued the report relied on insufficient evidence and hearsay.
The Constitutional Court began hearing the case on Tuesday.
