Niamey, Niger – The European Union (EU) has announced the recall of its ambassador from Niger following a dispute with the country’s ruling military junta over the management of humanitarian aid.
The EU’s decision comes after the junta accused the EU ambassador of mishandling a 1.3 million euro fund intended to assist flood victims. The military government alleged that the funds were distributed to several international NGOs in a non-transparent manner, without proper consultation with the authorities.
In response to these allegations, the junta ordered an audit of the fund’s management. The EU has vehemently denied the claims, asserting that the accusations are unfounded.
“The European Union expresses its profound disagreement with the allegations and justifications put forward by the transitional authorities,” the European External Action Service (EEAS) said in a statement.
