The Encounters South African International Documentary Festival, Africa’s premier platform for documentary storytelling, has officially announced its 27th edition, set to take place from June 19 to 29, 2025. Filmmakers worldwide are invited to submit feature-length, mid-length, and short documentaries for consideration at the festival, which will be held in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and various satellite venues.

Encounters, which has showcased top-tier documentaries since its establishment in 1999, continues to push boundaries in the genre while celebrating works that entertain, engage, and inspire. The 2025 edition aims to further solidify the festival’s legacy as a hub for innovative storytelling and a bridge connecting filmmakers to diverse audiences.

The festival prides itself on presenting award-winning and critically acclaimed documentaries alongside projects by emerging South African and African talents. It is particularly seeking films completed after January 2023 that explore themes such as social justice, politics, arts and culture, technology, current affairs, personal stories, education, history, and environmental issues.

Encounters offers filmmakers a unique platform through its expanded jury awards and outreach initiatives. Awards include the Adiaha Award, recognizing African women documentary filmmakers in collaboration with the Ladima Foundation; the Al Jazeera Best African and International Documentary Award; and The Refinery Best Edited Film award. These accolades celebrate creative excellence, innovative storytelling, and stories that challenge conventional narratives.

Submissions are open until February 24, 2025, at 11:59 PM SAST. While South African and African filmmakers can submit their work free of charge, international entries require a nominal fee of $25 USD. Works in progress are also eligible, provided they are finalized two weeks before the festival.

Encounters also extends an invitation to sponsors and supporters to contribute to the festival’s mission of elevating documentary filmmaking. Donations can be made via PayPal, and tax-deductible contributions are available through the Encounters Training and Development Institute.

For detailed submission rules or to enter a film, visit the festival’s official website.
