ABUJA – A fierce encounter between Nigerian security forces and Boko Haram militants on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of at least 50 insurgents. The clash occurred during a routine patrol mission to safeguard the country’s power grid infrastructure.
Babawale Afolabi, spokesperson for the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, revealed that the security personnel were ambushed by a large group of Boko Haram fighters, estimated to be around 200. Despite the heavy assault, Nigerian forces managed to repel the attack, inflicting significant casualties on the insurgents.
However, the incident also led to the disappearance of seven security personnel. Afolabi confirmed that search and rescue operations are underway to locate the missing officers. Additionally, several others sustained injuries during the confrontation.
While Boko Haram’s primary area of operation has been the northeastern region of Nigeria, the group has extended its reach to other parts of the country, including the largely Muslim Niger state. The group has been known to carry out attacks on both military and civilian targets.
In another incident in Borno state, five soldiers were killed in an ambush by suspected Boko Haram militants on Saturday. The military spokesperson confirmed the casualties and stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the attack.
The persistent threat posed by Boko Haram continues to be a significant security challenge for Nigeria. The government has intensified its efforts to combat the insurgency, but the group remains a formidable force, capable of carrying out deadly attacks.
