Accra, Nov. 10 – With Ghana’s 2024 General Election approaching, the National Media Commission (NMC) has expressed strong support for the newly established Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition, a partnership aimed at tackling misinformation and disinformation to uphold peace and stability.
In a statement issued by NMC Executive Secretary George Sarpong, the coalition’s formation was called a “crucial intervention” to protect the nation’s information space during this critical electoral period. Sarpong stressed that the coalition’s collective expertise bolsters Ghana’s defenses against misleading information and external interference, both seen as significant threats to democratic stability.
Launched on November 8, 2024, the coalition includes the Media Foundation for West Africa, Dubawa, FactSpace West Africa, and other groups focused on information integrity. Together, these organizations plan to counter misinformation and disinformation, which they describe as serious risks to Ghana’s peace and security.
The NMC urged all election-related stakeholders to support the coalition’s work, promoting efforts toward a peaceful election. The Commission also announced it would introduce the “Ghana Media Watch App” on November 14, 2024, a tool designed to monitor disinformation across digital platforms.
