Khartoum, Sudan – General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, has made significant changes to his cabinet, replacing several key ministers, including the foreign minister.
In a late-night announcement on Sunday, the Sovereign Council stated that Foreign Minister Hussein Awad Ali has been relieved of his duties and replaced by Ali Youssef Ahmed, who will assume the role of acting foreign minister.
Additionally, Khalid Ali Aleisir has been appointed as the new Minister of Information, taking over from Graham Abdelkader. Omar Bakhit has been named the Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, replacing Osama Hassan Mohamed Ahmed.
These cabinet reshuffles come as Sudan continues to grapple with a devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The war, which erupted in mid-April 2023, has resulted in the tragic loss of over 20,000 lives and the displacement of millions of people.
The international community, including the United Nations, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence and its humanitarian consequences. The conflict has exacerbated food shortages in 13 of Sudan’s 18 states, raising fears of a widespread famine.
