Jigawa State, Nigeria – A devastating fuel tanker accident in northern Nigeria has claimed the lives of at least 147 people. The incident occurred late on Tuesday when the driver of the tanker lost control of the vehicle, leading to a fuel spill and subsequent explosion.
The accident, one of the worst of its kind in recent memory, has further compounded the challenges facing Nigeria, which is already grappling with widespread security threats and a rising cost of living.
According to Haruna Mairiga, head of Jigawa state emergency services, the death toll from the explosion has reached 147. Local police spokesperson Lawan Shiisu Adam confirmed that the tanker was traveling from Kano to Yobe State when the driver lost control near Majia town. The ensuing fuel spill ignited a fire that engulfed the area, resulting in a tragic loss of life.
Fifty people were injured in the accident and have been taken to local hospitals for treatment. A mass burial for the victims was held on Wednesday.
Just last month, a similar explosion claimed the lives of at least 48 people in north-central Nigeria.
