Pretoria, South Africa – South African prosecutors have decided not to charge President Cyril Ramaphosa over the theft at his Phala Phala game farm, a case that nearly ended his presidency. The “Farmgate” scandal first came to light in June 2022, when a former intelligence official reported the incident to police, accusing Ramaphosa of money laundering, corruption, and covering up the theft.
The Director of Public Prosecutions in Limpopo announced on Thursday that after reviewing all the evidence, there was no reasonable prospect of a successful prosecution. The decision came following an investigation into claims that large sums of foreign currency were stolen from Ramaphosa’s farm in 2020, allegedly hidden in furniture.
Ramaphosa, who built his wealth as a businessman before becoming president, has denied any wrongdoing. South Africa’s anti-corruption watchdog had already cleared him last year of a potential conflict of interest in relation to the incident.
