Abuja, Nigeria – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has donated N640 million to Nigeria to support flood victims in Borno and Bauchi states. The donation is N320 million for each state.

Fatou Sow SARR, representing the Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu TOURAY, announced the donation during a visit to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

During the visit, Ms. SARR conveyed condolences from Dr. TOURAY to President Bola Tinubu and all Nigerians affected by the floods, which have claimed lives, displaced populations, and destroyed property. She commended the Nigerian government’s immediate response and ongoing humanitarian assistance to victims.

Ms. SARR acknowledged the impact of extreme weather conditions, including floods, in the ECOWAS region due to climate change. She reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to supporting Nigeria and other member states in coping with these challenges.

“The ECOWAS Commission stands firmly with the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in these trying times,” said Ms. SARR. “The Nigerian government has shown resolve even in the face of this disaster.”

She added, “To show our solidarity with the people of Nigeria, especially the victims and affected communities, and to respond to the immediate needs of women, children, and other vulnerable groups, the Commission has donated over three hundred and twenty million naira to flood relief victims in Borno State and over three hundred and fifty million naira to aid flood victims in Bauchi State.”

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mr. Abel Enitan, expressed gratitude to the ECOWAS Commission for its continuous support to Nigeria. He pledged to use the donations wisely to assist flood victims and affected communities.

“On behalf of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I wish to sincerely thank ECOWAS for its magnanimity and continuous support to Nigeria,” said Mr. Enitan. “The donation of N650 million symbolizes ECOWAS’ continued solidarity with Nigeria during this challenging time.”
