Washington, D.C. – Malawian President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed the country’s dedication to economic recovery and growth during a high-level meeting with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank in the United States.
President Chakwera met with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank Managing Director for Operations Anna Bjerde to discuss Malawi’s ongoing efforts to address economic challenges.
“President Chakwera’s meeting with these institutions was crucial to assure them of his commitment to turning around Malawi’s economy for the benefit of its citizens,” said Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda, who accompanied the President to the meeting.
Minister Banda highlighted the progress made on the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) with the IMF and Malawi’s debt restructuring initiatives. President Chakwera expressed gratitude to the IMF for its support during a critical period for Malawi.
During his meeting with World Bank’s Managing Director for Operations Anna Bjerde, President Chakwera acknowledged the bank’s contributions to Malawi’s development, particularly in areas such as social cash transfers and the energy sector through the JCM solar power project.
The World Bank also commended President Chakwera for his efforts in mobilizing financial support for other African countries.
